The Glory Of Christ - Wednesday August 20, 2008
And He is the image of the invisible God. Colossians 1:15
There are many reasons to serve God. But the greatest is the glory and greatness of His Son. We serve God because we have discovered a Person who is worthy of our complete devotion and love.Is the Son, Jesus Christ, really that great? Can He really satisfy above all else? In Colossians 1:15-17, Paul gives several descriptions of Christ which give a glimpse of His greatness. One of these descriptions is that He is the image of the invisible God. God's invisibility can pose a difficulty for some. We live in a visual world, and our western culture especially is a visually-oriented culture. God is the invisible God and many of us can have a hard time with invisible things! But Paul tells us in this passage that Christ is the image of the invisible God which means three things:In Christ the invisible has become visible,The transcendent has drawn near,The unknown has become known. This is the best news we can give to our friends, for every person needs a relationship with the invisible, transcendent God. Our hearts will never be at rest until they find their rest and peace in the Son, who is the image of the invisible God-"the exact representation of His nature" (Hebrews 1:3).God will work in our hearts to show us this truth: he who has the Son has the Treasure of all treasures. God will work in our hearts until we learn to stop giving our affection to things that cannot satisfy and to give our affection to the only One who can satisfy, the Son of our Father in heaven, the One who is the image of the invisible God.
